ABHISHEK MUKHERJEE WINS GOLD MEDAL IN HOMI BHABHA COMPETITION

Abhishek Mukherjee (IX D) getting a Gold Medal in the Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik Competition
The Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik Competition, conducted by the Mumbai Science Teachers’ Association is a unique science competition, wherein the students’ understanding of scientific concepts and principles is tested. The competition is held in four stages - first a written test, followed by science practical tests, and further followed by project work, viva voce and interview. There is elimination at each stage, with over 30,000 students from all over Maharashtra appearing for Stage 1. The entire focus of the competition is to evaluate the students’ logical thinking process and applicability of scientific principles in solving practical problems. At Stage 3, called the ‘Action Research Project’ (ARP), a theme is given, and the student needs to do a project on any topic with the given theme. The findings need to be scientifically documented and practical solutions need to be presented for the problems.  A well structured project report also needs to be submitted.
The ARP theme this year was ‘Integrated Pest Management’ and Abhishek chose the topic ‘Pest Mitigation in Domestically Stored Rice’. Scientifically studying the effect of weevils on rice, he systematically analyzed the effect of substances like castor oil, neem leaves, parad tablets and boric powder in enabling reduction of weevils. The conclusion reached was that, all factors considered, neem leaves served as the most effective pest inhibitor for domestically stored rice.
At a function on 3rd March 2013, Abhishek was awarded a Gold medal for his exemplary performance in the competition.

As we are aware, it is not just a medium of communication , but also a dynamic language which has the power to convey our thoughts the way we want to be inferred.
Events such as debates and extempores are stepping stones that help us hone out communication skills which are in sync with our thoughts. They are great barrier- breakers, often helping the child to get over his psychological fears such as stage fright and inhibitions among others. We intend making the debate an annual feature and I am extremely happy to see these enterprising students come forward to represent their schools. I also appreciate the fact that the judges have given us their valuable time, thereby making the event extra special”.
